TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Technical Requirements for DNASTAR Software

Please also see specific hardware recommendations for Lasergene Genomics, as well as technical requirements for DNASTAR Cloud, Nova applications, and the DNASTAR License Server for a network version of our software.

Windows

64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, and 10

Intel compatible Pentium class processor with AVX support1 or AMD processor

4 GB RAM2

400 MB of available hard-disk space

256 MB video card with OpenGL 3.0 support (recommended for use with Protean 3D)

Internet access (required to authorize)3

Mac

macOS 10.13, 10.14, 10.154, and 11.05

M1 or Intel-based Mac with AVX support1

4 GB RAM2

520 MB of available hard-disk space

512 MB video card with OpenGL 2.1 support (recommended for use with Protean 3D)

Internet access (required to authorize)3

1 AVX support is required for MegAlign Pro 17.1 and later.

2 RAM requirements vary depending on size of data being analyzed.

3 NovaFold Cloud users require an internet connection for starting predictions and viewing results.
If you are interested in running NovaFold on a local server instead of on the Cloud, please contact us.

4 Protean 3D incompatibility with macOS 10.15 and higher.

5 Compatibility issues with macOS Big Sur.

Note: ArrayStar was designed to run on Windows operating systems only. However, you can run ArrayStar on a Macintosh with an Intel processor by using Parallels Desktop with Windows 7 or higher installed. Access to Lasergene Genomics’s variant annotation database is offered through ArrayStar and requires a broadband internet connection.

Lasergene Genomics Hardware Recommendations

Performing large scale NGS alignments or de novo sequence assemblies can require significant hard disk space and memory. That’s why we offer DNASTAR Cloud Assemblies, so that you can easily utilize our cloud computing resources to align and assemble your NGS data, using any laptop or desktop computer that meets our minimum requirements above.

If you choose to run large scale NGS projects locally, please see our hardware recommendations below based on project type.

Reference-Guided Alignments & De Novo Transcriptome Assemblies

  • 16 GB RAM (For Reference-Guided Genome and Targeted Resequencing Assemblies) or 32 GB RAM* (For RNA-Seq and De novo Transcriptome Assemblies)
  • Intel i7, AMD Ryzen7, or Xeon 4-Core processor with Hyper-Threading
  • One 1-4 TB** hard drive for storing temporary files (“scratch disk”)
  • One 1-4 TB hard drive for storing input and output files
  • Minimum 250GB free on C: drive

*Exceedingly deep data sets or RNA data sets that have not been ribo-depleted may require additional RAM and/or increases in allocation of virtual memory. Also see: How much disk space do I need for my templated genome assembly?

**The size of the hard drive required for storing temporary files is largely dependent upon the size of the reference sequence used and the amount of sequence data assembled.

Microbial Reference-Guided Genome Alignments

  • 8 GB RAM
  • Intel i5 or Xeon Dual Core
  • One 250GB hard drive for storing temporary files (“scratch disk”)

De Novo Genome Assemblies

  • 16-32 GB RAM**
  • 4-Core 3 GHz processor

**Memory requirements for de novo assemblies increase in proportion to the number of assembled sequences and contigs. We recommend at least 1 GB of RAM per Mb of genome length at 50x coverage. During assembly, it may be helpful to watch the Activity Monitor/Task Manager to make sure adequate memory is available. If adequate memory is not available, either reduce the number of input reads or increase RAM. Also see How much RAM do I need for my de novo genome assembly?

DNASTAR Cloud Technical Requirements

Array

DNASTAR Cloud Assemblies

  • SeqMan NGen (part of Lasergene Genomics) installed on Windows or Mac
  • Internet connection
  • Recommended download speed of 10Mb/second
  • Recommended upload speed of 2Mb/second
Array

DNASTAR Cloud Data Drive

  • 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, or 10
  • Mac 10.13, 10.14 or 10.15
  • Internet Connection
  • Recommended download speed of 10Mb/second
  • Recommended upload speed of 2Mb/second

*Please note: The DNASTAR Data Drive has been configured to provide you with the fastest possible data transfer. When using the DNASTAR Data Drive to transfer large files (such as data supporting a whole human genome sequencing project) you or others in your organization may experience a temporary Internet slowdown. We suggest that data transfer for large projects be performed at off-peak times to minimize the possibility of disruption.

Nova Applications Technical Requirements

NovaFold is DNASTAR’s protein structure prediction software which can be run on the Cloud or locally on a server at your organization.

These requirements are for the local version of NovaFold, NovaDock, and NovaFold Antibody.
